Trip To China (Back In '09)

A note from Joelle...
Happy Halloween everyone!
Today I was looking back at an old journal of mine and looked at what I wrote three years ago today. I had just touched down at Heathrow after a miserable 12 hour plane journey from Beijing with a splitting headache and my school teacher really angry at me and my group of friends at the time. I totally cringe when I remember all the stuff that happened on that trip, but it was a really memorable place and I would love to go back one day!
And anyway, who can say they walked on the Great Wall of China at just 15 years old and in Uggs?
I did write a blog post about my time in China three years ago, but that blog no longer exists. So here is a brand new collage of my time there.
All of these photos were taken by me, if you were wondering!
Myself and S standing on the closest place to Heaven (in Chinese folklore)! This was at The Temple of Heaven.

I,S,B and I on the Great Wall!
Making friends with a school student called Theresa

We travelled to Beijing, Xi'an (and other places that I cannot remember the name of). I remember seeing the Forbidden City, Tienanmen Square, The Terracotta Warriors, The Great Wall, pearl and jade factories and  many more! If you ever get the opportunity to go, GO!!

Celebrity Bloggers

A note from Joelle...
I think It's great that some well-known faces from the TV are getting more and more social media savvy. It's a great way for them to showcase what they get up to and showcase their passion for beauty, fashion, design  on a different platform.
I have selected five of my favourite celebrity bloggers below. Be inspired!
Rosie Fortescue  at  At Fashion Forte
- Rosie started her fashion and art blog back in May 2011 and features weekly updates from her chic Made In Chelsea wardrobe. I featured her style in my Style File section last month, which you should totes check out by the way!
I really like how she mixes high street and designer pieces together to make a sleek and well-structured outfit.
Her style is quite androgynous (lost of trousers and sharply-cut jackets) with a feminine twist (often through her accessories such as Liliyang or Prada handbag).

Oliver Proudlock  at Proudlock Style
- Also from Made In Chelsea, Oliver Proudlock is an artist and blogger with some serious style. After finishing an art degree in Newcastle, he set up a  luxury T-shirt label called Serge DeNimes.
His style is a hybrid of casual-urban, with almost cheeky hints of classical gentlemen (just look at his neatly combed hair!!!!), which goes really well.
I am really glad that more male fashion bloggers are coming through, as this industry is totally female-dominated. As I have three sisters, I have no clue about male fashion, but boy, it looks interesting!

Lauren Conrad at  The Beauty Department
- This is one of my favourite blogs, and I never new that Lauren Conrad was behind it! I first found it more that a year ago when I was searching the web for a blueberry boy-bait recipe, and lo and behold... I found this amazing tutorial blog. As much as I love the Youtube beauty vloggers, I tend to go to this website more for the nail, hair and make-up tutorials.
Lauren does not run it alone however! Fashion and beauty gurus Kristin Ess and Amy Nadine are also contributers.
Lauren also has her own personal blog over at laurenconrad.com!

The Courtin-Clarins Girls at Beauty Flash Blog
-These four French Cousins (Virginie, Claire, Prisca and Jenna) are the face behind the cosmetic brand Clarins. They are the granddaughters of the founder of the cosmetic line, Jacques Courtin-Clarins and are the 'It-Girls' of the French fashion scene.
They fuse both beauty and elegant Parisian fashion together  and can always match your skin type with a Clarins product. Their blog offers beauty tutorials, current celebrity trends and also bits and bobs from their busy schedules. C'est très chic!

Ashley Madekwe at Ashley Ring My Bell
 - Ashley is an English actress best know for playing Ashley Davenport in Revenge. Her blog focuses on her unique style and has been raved about by Vogue, ASOS, Look Magazine and more! Over the past couple onf months, her readers have grown to over 10 thousand and she shows no sign of slowing down!

Do you follow any celebrity blogs or now of any more? Let me know below!

A note from Joelle...
You guys know that I'm as total sucker for competitions and getting creative! The main prize is a £70 giveaway and to win, bloggers must go on Barratts’ website and choose a selection of shoes they would buy! The second prize is a £30 Rafflecopter giveaway! Cool right?
Check out the competition info on Hello Terri Lowe 's blog.

1.Ruby Rocks Knitted Cowboy Boots - Dark tanned leather boots look great on everyone and these ones have kitted prints! It add a bit more 'pizazz' to the boot and it look so cosy and autumnal.

2. Odeon Platform Court Shoes - You guys already know that I am in love with cobalt blue! My picture of these shoes do not do it justice, so click the link! Every girl needs a vibrant-coloured heel to stand out at an event. And you can never go wring with platform heels!

3. Ankle Strap Party Sandals - I am really into heeled sandals at the moment, as I saw people at all the Fashion Weeks parading gracefully around in them. They are also really popular for A/W trends on the red carpet at the moment! How do they keep their toes warm in the UK weather? Haha!

4. Chain Trim Slipper Pumps - Slipper pumps are everywhere at the moment and they look so classy. I have a pair on studded ones from Primark, but these look great with the golden chain across it.

Bond's Girls: Judi, Naomie and Berenice

A note from Joelle...
                                                                                   ♫ ♪ Skyfall - Adele
It was the world premier in London (Royal Albert Hall) of the 23rd Bond film, 'Skyfall'. It was held the Tuesday just gone (also the 23rd - See what they did there?) and loads of celebrities and royals turned up to the event. Name drop: Naomi Campbell, Emeli Sande and TRHs Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.
It is also a special occasion for 007 fans because this year marks the 50th anniversary of the  the film franchise.
No that's enough about the history, not on to the more important info.. the fashion, of course!
Firstly, Dame Judi Dench looked absolutely flawless in this iced-blue floor-length gown and matching jacket .
judi-dench-skyfall-london-premiere.jpg
source
What was even more interesting was that Dame Judi also sported a really cool diamanté '007' tattoo on her neck! A really cool touch to the outfit, in my opinion. Her hair, outfit and jewels actually made her look like a real-life diamond - timeless, elegant and oh so classy!
007: But the 77-year-old actress added a fun dimension to her red carpet look with a James Bond-inspired 'neck vajazzle'
source
Naomie Harris wore a shimmering blue leotard bodice with black sheer pleated gown frame over the top by London designer, Marios Schwab. Her open-toe heeled sandals looked fabulous too and are bang on trend for SS'13 and AW 2012.
I was really surprised that she wore such a striking leotard and sheer over-gown, but her elegance and poise really helps to pull it off.

Berenice Marlohe wore a stunning rouge gown by Vivienne Westwood and Stephen Webster jewellery. The French actress has an incredible figure (so jealous!) and definitely stood out - even if she did match the carpet!

Sneak Peek At My Week #8

A note from Joelle...

I didn't actually do much last week. Work and studying got the better of me, so most of the photos are of what I ate! I did go on a geography field trip of the Forvie National Reserve though. It was fun and I was in great company! As a Geology student, I know I will be climbing cliffs/mountains/volcanoes in the future, so there is no point bringing the false lashes and make-up bag! Measuring the hardness of rocks on a beach might not be everyone's cup of tea, the the scenery was amazing and hey, it's what I love!
One the beach at Forvie reserve, Reese's Peanut butter cups, Rocking the hard hats on geography field trip, Sunday morning breakfast, Stunning view at Forvie, Tuna and cheese pasta bake, Chinese take-away, Measuring rocks on the beach, TEA!

I think you can definitely see the food patterns appearing in my 'Week In Pictures' posts. Oh, the life of a student!

1920s Flapper Style With Rare Fashion

A note from Joelle...
You guys know that vintage-inspired accessories and clothes from the 20s and 30s are a real favourite of mine, right? So I was so happy when Rare Fashion brought in their new trend collection called 'Fringe'. This involves dresses and tops with fringed tassels on them, sequins and beaded embellishments! Love it!
It reminds me of those glamorous costumes from films such as Cabaret, Anything Goes and Chicago that show off a lot of leg and has a great shimmer to it!
I also found some 20s-inspired headbands that would be totally suitable for a speakeasy party (without the illegal booze of course!).
So have a look at the pieces I selected. Will you be trying this trend this season? Let me know below!

Jenny Packham Wedding Dress Collection for SS'13

A note from Joelle...
Okay, I have been raving about Jenny Packham for nearly a year now (see first post here) and her designs just get better and better. I can now recognise her designs straight away on a red carpet or celebrity gala.
You probably know that it is a dream of mine to wear a Jenny Packham 1930s-inspired gown if I ever get married. Now all I need a is man to marry...
Her bridal designs are like a whimsical fairytale where class and elegance is key and the understated gown shapes are a true masterpiece!
The brand makes delicate, yet real statement dresses without going OTT. I love the beads, lace and  delicate materials that make Jenny Packham gowns so unique.
I watched the live stream of the Jenny Packham Bridal catwalk show in New York on Sunday and was so impressed with the designs. And Ms Packham, if you are reading this (probably not), please name a dress 'Joelle' in your next collection! Okay, that was quite cheeky of me, haha.
I would say this collection is for the modern lady who loves the style, glitz and glamour of the 1930s.
Here are my favourite pieces from the new Jenny Packham 2013 collection:

Next 'London' Fragrance

A note from Joelle...
A much as I love my signature floral Caharel 'Anais Anais' scent, I went to Next to pick up the 'Fashion Week' fragrances, which is not their official name, I just call them that. The new fragrance set is Paris, Milan, New York and London of course. This automatically made me think of the Fashion Week cities!
I tried the Paris scent first - wasn't too keen on it at all.
Then New York - not for me.
Then Milan - hmmm, I like this... but the taste got in my mouth and put me off it.
Naturally, I went with 'London' as the tester sample in the store smelt heavenly and I could see other shoppers around me coming closer to get a better whiff of it.
The box reads... 'A fresh floral composition with citrus bursts, evolving to a powdery musky base. An eclectic aroma evoking a sense if individuality and creativity.' Ooo-er!
But it's true - the aroma is sensational and just for £8 for 50ml? I was very happy indeed!
The main ingredients are lychee, peony rose and musk cedar-wood  - wonderful blend, I must say. I have never smelt anything like this. My Anais Anais might be a thing of the past now!
What I will say, however, is that you only require one or two sprays of this on yourself. Any more and it is a tad overpowering for the people sitting next to you! (I found that out during a lecture!)
So next time you are in Next, why not head over the the fragrance section and try this out?

Have you ever stumbled into a nightclub and saw that you (or your friend) were looking a bit rough?  Did you see messy hair, bruises, patchy make-up or even a ripped dress?

Quote Of The Week

A note from Joelle...
This week has been really hard for me. It finally hit me that I am 700 miles away from my home (in another country) and family and even though I have lots of university friends around me, I still felt really lonely at times. I like my degree choice, but I can't wait for first year to be over and done with, so I can just get on with life (my course is 4 years instead of 3)!
The lectures were incredibly overwhelming at the start as well, plus my timetable might as well had been written in Sanskrit!
On the bright side, the weather this week was glorious (quite odd for northern Scotland) and I hope this week will be much, much better!

I found these quotes earlier this week and they stuck with me for days. I hope they inspire you too!

Winter Warmers #1: Mama's Bread And Butter Pudding

A note from Joelle...
My Mother makes the BEST bread and butter pudding...ever! This is her recipe, but I have tweaked some of the spices a bit. She has been making this since my sisters and I were really small and sometimes used croissants and brioche instead of normal bread.
This recipe is not only delicious, but is also great for a cosy Autumn night in! Enjoy!

You will need:
Slices of white bread
Margarine
Raisins/sultanas
4 eggs
Milk
Vanilla extract
Nutmeg
Cinnamon
Caster Sugar

Method:
1. Grease a baking tray with oil or butter
2. Spread butter on both sides of the bread and then cut diagonally in half
3. Assemble the buttered bread in an overlapping pattern in the greased baking dish and then set aside.
4. Soak the raisins in hot water for 5 minutes so that they do not burn in the oven and are nice and chewy.
5. Scatter the raisins over the bread in the baking dish
6. For the custard, whisk together the eggs, sugar, milk and spices and then pour over the bread and raisins.
7. Bake in the oven for 45 minutes (or until dark golden brown) and then serve with custard, cream or ice cream!
Et voilà!
