High Flying, Adored

A note from Joelle...

♫ ♪ 'High Flying Adored' - Antonio Banderas (Evita Soundtrack) ♫ ♪

Hi guys! I hope you are well. The sunshine is back in Aberdeen and I am finally feeling ready to take on my exam today. It's a tough one - Geophysics, but I am ready to face it! *pumps fist in the air!*

The wonderful folks at House of Fraser kindly gifted me this Mela Loves maxi dress and I am in love with it. Seriously, this dress is the one.
I often avoid maxi dresses because they never seem to fit my body shape, but this one perfect-fitting and the print is beautiful. Plus, I am able to stay chic in black this Summer - YAY!
Long, light and versatile! Plus, it's now under £22, so snap it up while you can!
I was flooded with so many compliments from friends (and strangers!), but all the credit must go to Mela Loves.
Their dresses have the most quirky and beautiful prints that are ideal for this time of the year.
What do you think of my headgear? I often love wearing all black, but I really did need a 'pop of colour' in this outfit! Such a cliche for a blogger, haha!
Flower Crown - Primark
Sunglasses - ASOS
Necklace - New Look

I hope you have a fabulous weekend!

Google Secret Spaces: #BTTowerTrip

A note from Joelle...
Last week I mentioned a fabulous event taking place at the iconic BT Tower. To celebrate its 50th birthday, the tower re-opened for it's doors to some lucky guests and were treated to a special talk and an even more special view of the City of London!
Images courtesy of BT

The Money Phone box made from copper coins!
In collaboration with Google, BT have been giving dedicated Google users the chance to experience their favourite places and some extra special secret places.
The event consisted of a brief talk from a BT spokesperson about the BT Tower history and significance. An insightful ‘School of Life’ talk about London followed as well as the famed Portrait and Music photographer Andy Fallon giving a talk.
Just look at that view!
If you would like to see more information or imaged from the event, check out @BT_UK on twitter and the #BTTowerTrip hashtag!

Are there any secret spaces that you love in your town?

'Cause I'm 'Appy!

A note from Joelle...

♫♪ 'Dancing On My Own' - Robyn ♫♪

Here's a different kind of post from me! I have had my iPhone for just over a year now and it is safe to say that I have gone through my fair share of apps. Here are my current favourites!

Daily Water - It is like an alarm clock but for when you need to have a glass of water. My phone chimes about 8 times a day to remind me I need a drink! You can also keep track of your hydration levels and progress. Really handy if you want to get healthier this summer.

Dropbox is free and easier to use than most of its contemporaries. Dump files you want to sync in a folder on your computer and Dropbox for your device will enable you to access them, download them for offline viewing, and, in many cases, view them.

Samsung Smart Camera - This genius app creates a personal wifi connection between my iPhone and camera. This allows me to send pictures/videos from my camera to my phone!

Sudoku - I LOVE sudoku and do a puzzle every morning and night. I feel like it is boosting my brain power and is helping my problem-solving skills, which has never been my strong point.

7 Min Workout - It's exactly what it says on the app: a 7 minute (intense) workout. Great for a really quick, but effective morning session.

Shazam is a cool app that lets you find/downloads songs that are playing around you. You just open the app, hold it up to the music and it will track the song and let you download it. This is one of my most used apps!

Instagram - We all know what this is! Follow me HERE!

Around Me - In an unknown area and want to find an ATM/cafe/train station, etc? This is the app for YOU! It allows to to find anything you want around you.

We Heart It - A nice place to find pretty pictures, inspirational quotes and

4 Pics, 1 Song - You get 4 pictures and you have to guess the song title. Loads of current and oldies in the mix - very addictive!

Calm.com - I featured this app in my '5 Ways To Relax' post. It's really really calming and ideal if you have trouble sleeping/relaxing!

Pinterest - I have basically planned out my whole live on Pinterest. It's so addictive!

Bloglovin' - A good way to keep up with all the blogs you follow and find new ones.

Learn French by MindSnacks - I am getting a lot more confident with my French vocab because of this app. It allows you to play games in order to remember words and earn points that can unlock more games.

Free Wifi Finder - Yes, I'm that guy who is constantly on the search for free wifi!

National Rail - If you are a regular on trains (in the UK) then you NEED app. You can check your train arrivals, departures and know first-hand if there are delays.

I hope you liked this post! Any app you're loving at the moment? :)

5 Minutes With... Hannah Wilkinson

A note from Joelle...
This week's Blogging interview is all about Hannah, creator of www.dimplesdiaries.co.uk

1. What's your name and where are you from?
My name's Hannah and I'm from North Yorkshire, but currently studying and living in Southampton.
2. Why/how did you get into blogging?
I've always had a passion for style and clothes and I came across the blogger Frassy and fell in love with what she was doing, so thought to myself... "yeah I want to give this a go!".
3. Describe your blog  in 5 words or less!
Eclectic, vintage and shiny things!
4. What do you enjoy the most about writing?
My blog acts also as a kind of online diary, so I love how honest and open I can be.
5. Is there anything you don't enjoy about blogging?
No, I absolutely love everything about blogging, it can be frustrating though when the weathers crap and you're desperate to take photographs or you don't have anyone around to take photographs for you!
6. Are there any other bloggers who inspire/motivate you?
Absolutely, I follow hundreds and hundreds of bloggers and they all inspire me, but I am a dedicated follower of Carrie from Wish Wish Wish and Olivia from What Olivia Did... I definitely hope my blog will be as wonderful as theirs one day!
7. What is the best tip/advice you have learned from blogging so far?
I'd say to be yourself, don't think you need to copy what someone else is doing. A blog with its own personality is most appealing in my eyes!
8. Is there a fashion or beauty product you could not live without?
I couldn't live without my Clarins Beauty Flash Balm cream, I don't wear foundation and so that cream does wonders to my skin in the morning when it's looking dull.
9. What is the best piece of advice you would give to new bloggers?
I'd say to join in with blogger chats on twitter as often as you can, chat to loads of other bloggers and follow blogs so you're constantly getting inspired...and of course just be yourself!

10. Where do you get inspiration/information from to create your blog content?
My blog documents what I wear day-to-day so I'm inspired more by photography sites and street style sites. I'm a big fan of The Sartorialist and I'm constantly scrolling through Trend Hunter.
11. What are your main hobbies/interests outside of blogging?
I love cooking, music, film, art...anything cultural! So when I can find time outside of my busy schedule I love going to exhibitions, seeing live music and of course spending time with my friends and other half.
12. What does the rest of 2014 have in store for your blog?
My blog resolutions are to improve my photography and to post more often and I've been thinking about venturing into the vlog world also!
Thanks so much Hannah for taking the time out to answer some questions! Make sure to check out her blog HERE - it's truly wonderful!

The 'Deen Scene: The Library Struggle

A note from Joelle...
This £60 million glass box is my uni library - isn't it pretty? Well it is on the outside! On the inside, it's seven floors of stress, annoying people and an overall 'Crap, I-have-to-relearn-everything-from-this-year-in-two-weeks' vibe.
I own this image
So, I am currently sitting in my uni library writing this post. I'd love to tell you that it was an easy journey that consisted of entering the building, locating a seat and then finally sitting down to study, but alas, 'twas not that simple.
It's an actual hustle to get a good desk/computer and I wish I was exaggerating...
I resorted to silently harassing this poor lad off a computer by standing over him a with death-stares as he cruised Facebook without a care in the world. I even started entering my login details before he even left the seat! Sorry bro, I had a deadline.
There needs to be a sign, updating students of the number of free spaces (like a car park), because I do not appreciate walking up nine flights of stairs only to walk back down minutes later without having done any work. Sure, it's a great leg workout, but I came to the library to sit staring at ridiculously hard work, not tone my legs!
Here's a little break-down of my time spent in my uni library:
Yeah, I made this pie chart...
Finding a seat - Now, my uni has 7 floors, but does this mean you are guaranteed a place to sit? HA, of course not!
People annoyingly place their bags/coats/general shit on chairs to 'save them for a friend', who never actually bothers to turn up, thus wasting both our time. I'm sorry, did we just enter a primary school dining hall circa. 2002?
I wouldn't be surprised if we started a Library Hunger Games where we fight to the death for the best seats. I knew my archery skills would be useful one day...

Strangers Opposite you - They are never normal people, are they? It's that dodgy eye contact where you both happen to look at each other at the same time, which makes things mega awks from then on.
In addition, the number of times these thirsty guys have 'accidentally' stroked my leg/foot/hair is just ridiculous. If I wanted to be groped by wastemen, I would've gone to The Pearl Lounge club.

The 'wifi' - I can't even bring myself to blog about this as it just makes me so angry.

In all fairness, not everyone can get a view like this whilst studying in a multi-million pound building (or study in a library at all!) so I am incredibly fortunate, but I do like a little rant now-and-again ;)

I hope you are seeing a pattern with image ownership
Next year, I am going to be in 3rd year and will therefore be spending about 90% of my time in the library. If ANYONE dares to cross me, I can't be held responsible for my actions (evil glares and indirect tweets...).
Good luck if you have exams by the way! Myself and my bae, Ryan are rooting for you!

Soak Up The Sun

A note from Joelle...

♫♪ 'Soak Up The Sun'  -Sheryl Crow  ♫♪

The sun has FINALLY reached Scotland and I think everyone is in a better mood.
To celebrate, I wore ASOS, and lots of it! Thanks to that mega 20% sale they did last week, I snapped up this colourful cami dress! What do you think of it?
Sunglasses - ASOS
Cami Dress - ASOS : I bought this for about £14 last week and absolutely love it! It's so light and the pattern has been getting a lot of attention!
As I am on my way to uni, I styled the dress in simple pumps. It would have made more sense if I went for my navy Converse pumps, but I quite the mismatched colours!

Ring - ASOS : I should have done a close-up, but it's a metal book, that opens like a locket. I will be putting a cheeky picture of my friends in there!
Cardi - H&M : Just a simple black one with no pockets (annoyingly!)
Pumps - eBay

Pleeeeeeeeeease send me your positive vibes, please. Exam season is nigh!!
Have a great day!

Google Secret Spaces

A note from Joelle...
Something exciting is coming to the people of London.
One of the most iconic (and tallest) towers in London is to be opened to the public for the first time since the 1980s.
source
But to celebrate its 50th Birthday, BT (in partnership with Google are giving a select group of Google-fanatics the chance to travel to the top! Just to give you an idea of how tall it is, if you parked 20 double-decker buses end-to-end, that is the same height as the BT Tower - wow!
Not only will they get a spectacular view of London, but The Secret Spaces Campaign will allow them to gain access to their favourite places on Google Maps.

This event is happening in the BT Tower tomorrow and will include:

·         A talk from a BT spokesperson about the famed BT Tower
·         ‘School of Life’ talk about London, where guests will learn more about the Capital
·          A very special Photography course with Portrait and Music photographer Andy Fallon

Like me, you can learn more about the campaign  and tomorrow's event using the #BTTowerTrip tag and you can also find out what's happening from the @BT_UK account!

Your Dream Career Awaits!

A note from Joelle...

♫♪ 'Carry On' - Fun. ♫♪

I have wanted to be a Geologist (a scientist who studies the earth...kind of) since the age of 7. And 13 years' later, I am just two years away from Graduating as a Petroleum Geologist!
I have had my share of obstacles and mistakes along the way, but knowing that I have stuck to my passion when loads of people thought I wouldn't is the best feeling EVER!
However, in this day and age, it's not that simple going straight from uni and into your dream job. I can only imagine the nightmare of coming out of uni with no guaranteed work and a huge £30,000 loan to pay back! So when I was alerted to a fresh, new job site called City Calling, I thought I'd share it with you!
City Calling is a site for young people looking for their dream job or who want more advice about finding their career.
Both employers and job seekers can create an account and can check the Job board, full of firms/companies/organisations that are currently hiring.
You can create an account in a few easy steps, upload you CV and also write a few sentences about your hobbies/qualities!
I may still have a few more years at uni, but I have set up a City Calling account and a currently scrolling through nearly 2000 job vacancies! You never know, my dream job in the Big Smoke could be on this site!

So what do you think? Whether you looking for a fresh, new job or just want some advice on exam stress, City Calling is here you YOU! Will you try something new and see where it takes you? Your dream career awaits!

The 'Deen Scene: CUP

A note from Joelle...

♫♪ 'The Show' - Lenka ♫♪

I'm baaaaaaaaaack - sort of!

I am one of those girls who like sitting in tea shops with good company and a good brew. So with that in mind, I took my pal Elsh to a place I have been to quite a lot this year: CUP!
This quirky tea shop is tucked away on a little cul-de-sac off of Belmont St and usually packed with afternoon tea-fanatics! We were lucky to even get a seat as there is usually a queue around the corner!
As it was around brunch time, I ordered a pot of Earl Grey with a WEDGE of red velvet cake. The cake was smothered in solid white chocolate instead of cream cheese and it was bliss! Elsh also went for the red velvet and a big coffee.

This is a great place to come with a few friends, your parents or even on a wee date! We saw two kids having afternoon tea with their Dad is it was really cute to see!
After the tea, we were up for trying more on the menu, so went for a light lunch...
Above is Elsh's Quesadilla with nachos, salad and salsa. It looked so good!
I had this mango salad with nachos, sweet potato soup and a tomato/basil panini - such a fabulous combination! To be honest, I was expecting a tiny panini, so was chuffed to get all of this!

I hope you enjoyed this little lifestyle snippet! If you are ever in Aberdeen City, come and pop in to CUP! Are there any cute tea salons near you?

Life Lately + Blogging Break?

A note from Joelle...

♫♪'Good Riddance' - Green Day♫♪

Uh, oh! Here's one of my 'life update' posts that you all love so much ;).
Cutting to the chase... I haven't been feeling too great these last couple of weeks and it has made blogging a bit of a chore.  Despite only having one exam, I am heavily bogged down with other bits of work, finding a flat for next year, trying to get better at driving and also trying to book holidays/fitness schedules. It's all a bit manic so I just wanted to let you know!
As most of you know, I went on a week-long field trip to the Isle of Arran and had a surprisingly good time!
After the Arran trip, I headed back to Aberdeen to spend some time with my pal Elsh. We went to a lot of tea shops and just chilled out for a few days before I headed home to London.
Fast forward a month and it's hard-core revision with new hair/dresses and a Ball in-between!

However........
I am exhausted. There, I said it. I am finding it quite hard to blog at the moment because I am constantly tired, ill and moody and I can't seem to shake it off like most people.
I call the the 'Meh' Complex, because that is how I feel: 'meh' *with a bit of shoulder shrugging to go with the phrase*.
Don't get me wrong, I love blogging and I how it makes me feel, but I definitely need to do other things for a while (LIKE PASS MY GEOLOGY EXAM!).
*NEW INFO ALERT!!* I am in the process of having one of my novels re-edited and published, so that's taking up a lot of time too.

I'm not one of those people who can hide their true feelings as my expressions just appear on my face without my noticing!! So I will still continue to blog (it's what I love and I can't stop!), but maybe only once or twice a week.  I don't want to insult your eyes with crappy posts just to keep my blog 'relevant', so that's why I'm making a few changes to get my life back in order!
What do you think? I hope you stick around during this pseudo-hiatus.

I'll still be ranting (practically 24/7) on Twitter (@joelle_o), so make sure to hit me up on there if you want to chat!

Thanks for reading!
